New football rights tender in Poland

By Chris Dziadul

The Polish premier football league Ekstraklasa has launched a tender for audiovisual bookmakers’ rights for the seasons 2019/20 and 2020/21.

In a statement, it says the commercialisation of the rights is being undertaken jointly with the DTH platform nc+, the main TV broadcaster of Ekstraklasa since 1995. It adds that in the first instance licensed bookmakers operating on the Polish market will be invited to submit bids. Contracts with those selected will be signed by April 30 this year. By the end of this season the league will also sell the rights to highlights on TV and the internet, as well as the international rights.

Commenting on the development, Marcin Animucki, chairman of the board at Ekstraklasa, said: “after the success of contracts for the rights to domestic television broadcasts, we are beginning to sell smaller packages. This is very important for us due to the additional funds that will be provided to clubs and the role of promoting games among fans. This year, for the first time ever, we want to offer rights to bookmakers operating in Poland. We have already had a series of meetings with their representatives and as a result of discussions with nc + have developed packages to show Ekstraklasa games on bookmaker platforms”.

As part of the tender procedure, bookmakers will be offered two packages. The first will allow the purchase of rights to broadcast 296 Ekstraklasa football matches exclusively, and as a result showing Ekstraklasa matches for a limited period on the online bookmaker platform where bets are accepted. The second, alternative package will allow up to four licensed companies accepting bets to purchase such rights without exclusivity.

MyCanal to debut in Poland

By Chris Dziadul

Vivendi has earmarked Poland as one of the foreign markets in which it will launch its on demand service myCanal.

Speaking to Wirtualne Media, Piotr Kaniowski, head of corporate, technology and offers at the DTH platform nc+, confirmed the news first given by Arnaud de Puyfontaine, president and general director, Vivendi, when discussing the company’s plans last month.

Nc+ currently operates its own VOD service named nc+ Go and also works with Player+, owned by TVN and Discovery Polska. At this stage it remains unclear as to where or not myCanal will replace nc+ Go and be offered only to nc+ customers, or indeed be made available as a standalone service to the wider public.

Meanwhile, Maciej Maciejowski, a member of the board at TVN and Discovery Polska, said that Player and myCanal are completely different products and that in his view there is room for both in the Polish market.

TVP/nc+ win key football rights

By Chris Dziadul

Poland’s leading football league Ekstraklasa has signed a two year-agreement with Canal+ and the public broadcaster TVP.

Covering the seasons 2019/2020 and 2020/2021, it will see, thanks to what it calls an “innovative construction of media packages”, all 296 games per season carried on the DTH platform nc+ and TVP show 37 games FTA per season.

The value of the contracts with the two parties amounts to PLN250,000 (€58,168) per season, and as a result the media rights for Ekstraklasa are now the eighth most lucrative in Europe, having previously been the 11th.

Ekstraklasa notes that it still plans to sell the remaining media packages, including clips on TV and the internet, including mobile devices, for the two seasons.

It also says that it conducted the negotiations with Canal+ and TVP on its own, rather than with the assistance of the agency MP & Silva as in previous years.

The auction for the four seasons beginning 2021/2022 will take place only following the full clarification of the international calendar and the clubs’ agreement as to the structure of the league.
